Many procedures ask for a certified true copy rather than the original. A copy certified by a notary has the same evidential value for most purposes, and you keep your original document safe.
When you need one
Applications to universities, visas, residence permits, employers, banks and public tenders often ask for certified copies of diplomas, identity documents and certificates. Certified copies are also the usual basis for an apostille on documents you cannot part with.
